Low Tide

Winslow Homer; W. H. Kingdon

Object Label

Both High Tide and Low Tide, published in Boston’s short-lived weekly Every Saturday in August 1870, are illustrations after Homer’s oil paintings. High Tide is now known as Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts, 1870 (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). Disheartened by the critical reception of these works, Homer apparently destroyed the painting of Low Tide. When the owner of High Tide approached Homer to buy the companion painting, he was told that the picture had been painted out and the canvas reused for another work.
