The Robin's Note

Winslow Homer

1 of 2

Object Label

Because this engraving did not accompany a literary text or topical news, Homer was able to use a more personal style. His artistic freedom is most strongly felt in the structure of the composition, in which simple, geometric shapes invigorate the pictorial space in a strong pattern of lights and darks, and diagonal and vertical lines. A brief note of appreciation about the “charming summer picture, half picture and half poem” appeared inside the magazine.
