"A Country Store--Getting Weighed"

Winslow Homer; William James Linton

Object Label

Homer often contrasted the fashions and customs of the city with those of the country. Here a group of well-dressed women in citified clothing look on as a young woman is weighed by the country storekeeper. The plain, rustic interior of the store acts as a finely detailed foil for the varied textures and shades of the women’s elaborate dresses and cloaks, which surely were not purchased locally. The engraving is exquisitely rendered and exemplifies the high-quality reproduction that could be attained through the partnership of artist and master engraver.
