Object Label

This surimono print is the right sheet of a triptych. The design was based on a performance of The Barrier Gate. Kunisada has depicted Danjûrô VII in a climatic evening encounter in which two characters wield giant axes in a highly choreographed scene. Deluxe printing techniques are used in this design, including extensive use of metallic pigments. The poem printed in cursive script against the black sky is by Tsukushitei Aritake.
