CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION Spanish oil painting of Saint Peter, possibly painted by a student of Juan de Valdés Leal (Spanish, 1622-1690). The faces and hands are awkward and doughy, and the painter does not capture emotion as successfully and sensitively as Leal and other painters of the Spanish Baroque. A 1963 conservation report states the following: “Painting is in bad state – old lining is very dirty and brittle. To be exhibited should be re-lined, cleaned, etc. Cleavage exists, discolored varnish, old abrasion, etc. Cannot be keyed out as support would break.”
