CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION
This gold, mnaieion -- octadrachm (27mm, 27.75g) was minted in Alexandria between 265 and 246 B.C.E. On the obverse is the inscription T?O? (god) and conjoined busts of Ptolemy I Soter, (reigned 305-284 B.C.E.) diademed and wearing an aegis on the right, and Berenike I, his queen, diademed and veiled, with a Gallic shield to the left. On the reverse is the inscription A???FO? (shortened form of Philadelphon, “brother lover”) and conjoined busts of Ptolemy II Philadelphius on the right, diademed and draped, and Arsinoe II, his queen, diademed and veiled, shield to the left. Condition: Near Extra Fine, small scratch in obverse field.
