Lake George

John Henry Hill

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Hill lived for a number of years on a remote island in Lake George, becoming known as the Hermit of Lake George. His diaries reveal his complete immersion in every nuance of weather and seasonal change in the region, as well as a Ruskinian obsession with its spectacular geology—preoccupations that are evident in this highly detailed watercolor.
