Goatherds

John Singer Sargent

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Mindful of his plan to execute a painting of the Sermon on the Mount for the Boston Public Library mural cycle, Sargent visited the region of the Sea of Galilee, in Syria, where he completed oil and watercolor views of the lake, and of nearby Mount Tabor and the Plain of Esdraelon, as well as a number of figure subjects including Goatherds. Sargent rendered these works in a palette that is more evenly bright than that of the Bedouin subjects.
