Summer Clouds and Flowers

Marsden Hartley

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

The months that Hartley spent in Corea, Maine, in 1942 were exceptionally prolific because he was vigorously preparing for a one-person exhibition organized by his new dealer, Paul Rosenberg. Many of the paintings he executed were vibrant floral still lifes such as this one, most likely created with the expectation that they would be especially marketable.
