A Merry Company on the Banks of the Rímac River
Very few secular landscapes from colonial Peru survive today. This painting, with all the trappings of New World wealth, would have been an ideal candidate for display in an elaborately decorated estrado. Here, an elegant company seeks fresh air on the grounds of a country estate, seen in the left distance. The figures include peninsular Spaniards, Indians, Creoles, and African servants. The white men wear fashionable Europeanstyle suits, but their wealthy female counterparts are dressed in the distinctive native South American pollera ensemble (see illustration). The scene includes silver tea accoutrements, such as pavas (water heaters) and maté cups, that were common fixtures in South American estrados.
Muy pocos paisajes seculares del Perú colonial han sobrevivido hasta hoy. Esta pintura, con toda la rica parafernalia del Nuevo Mundo, hubiese sido ideal para exhibirse en el lujosamente decorado estrado. Aquí, un grupo elegante toma aire fresco en los terrenos de una casa de campo, que se ve a la distancia al lado izquierdo. Las figuras incluyen españoles peninsulares, criollos, indios y criados africanos. Los hombres blancos llevan trajes al estilo europeo, pero sus contrapartes femeninas visten la característica pollera autóctona sudamericana (ver ilustración). La escena incluye un servicio de té de plata, con pavas (calentadores de agua) y tazas de mate, artículos comunes en los estrados sudamericanos.
