Yuji Agematsu

Contemporary Art

Since emigrating from Japan in 1980, Yuji Agematsu has taken daily strolls around New York City. The artist collects the litter he encounters on the sidewalks—ranging from cigarette butts and gum to trinkets and glass shards—and assembles it into clear pouches that he calls “zips.” This ritualistic practice creates a record of time and place, forming an unconventional portrait of the city and its millions of inhabitants through their discarded traces.
