Frequent Art Questions

  • The figure in this candlestick looks familiar. Is it based on a bigger sculpture?

Possibly! Wedgwood frequently modeled pottery in his factory after existing sculptures and artifacts. Wedgwood and his partner Bentley advertised “a pair of tritons, from Michael Angelo (sic), 11 inches high” in their 1773 catalogue. The figure’s twisted torso and the bold rockwork strongly resembles Mannerist and early baroque sculpture.
