Study of a Head

John Henry Twachtman

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Like Thomas Wilmer Dewing, John Henry Twachtman found pastel to be a medium sympathetic to his own preference for subtly suggestive rather than firmly defined forms. Guided here by some restrained passages of pencil outline, he described his model’s head using areas of delicately blended tones and economically touched highlights.
