Winter Scene, Ukraine

Object Label
Il’ia Repin painted this wintry landscape outside, on blue paper that creates an atmospheric backdrop, in his hometown of Chuguev (now Chuhuiv, in present-day Ukraine) on December 11, 1876, according to the Cyrillic inscription that is visible at the bottom of the watercolor. Repin made this sketch after returning from an artistic sojourn in Europe, a place that, he observed in 1872, “needs a flood of fresh strength from the provinces.”
