Willows on the Banks of the Loire

Henri-Joseph Harpignies

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Harpignies takes a stand of willow trees as his subject for this sketch, focusing on their distinctive squat trunks and spindly branches, which he traces with long, linear brushstrokes. In contrast to the wispy tree limbs, the pillowy clouds and green foliage are painted thickly in white, yellow, and green.
