Trees

Homer Dodge Martin

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

From the outset of his career, Martin habitually spent his summers on outdoor sketching excursions to sites favored by Hudson River School artists. In these two drawings, he skillfully used crayon to articulate not only the basic forms but also the textural and tonal variations of his landscape subjects. Look closely at Trees to see the secondary image of a distant panorama drawn across the top of the sheet, which has been torn from a sketchbook.
