Object Label

The features of this uli figure—the large head with pointed beard, the short legs, and the presence of a penis and breasts—are characteristic of a complex set of mortuary ceremonies that developed in the mountainous central part of New Ireland. These attributes may not have been regarded as the stylized features of a particular person, but rather as the essential components of the aggressive strength and nurturing care required of an ideal ruler.
