Object Label

This woodcut illustration from an unidentified publication (possibly a guidebook) depicts Brooklyn’s nascent skyline as seen from Manhattan. A traveler described this same vista as “a beautiful object” in 1822. Both this written description and the woodcut indicate the growing aesthetic appreciation for America’s cityscapes.
