CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION Large rectangular plaque with commemorate legend, flanked by bas relief scenes of leather tanners at work: at left, bearded workman scraping hide with a knife, stands in front of window, accoutrements hanging on wall; at right, workman stirring hide in tanning vat with long pole, stands on plank placed over vat, basket on edge. Legend reads: 'THE / SCHIEREN BUILDING / ERECTED 1905 / THIS SITE, A PART OF THE HISTORIC / "OLD SWAMP" / FORMERLY THE NORTHERNMOST BOUNDARY OF THE CITY, / AND LARGELY DEVOTED TO TANNERIES, HAS BEEN OCCUPIED / FOR MORE THAN A CENTURY BY THE / HIDE AND LEATHER TRADES / IN EXCAVATING FOR THIS BUILDING OLD TAN VATS WERE FOUND IN A GOOD STATE / OF PRESERVATION, CONTAINING TAN BARK OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD.' Condition: Fair; allover light green patina, many rust stains.
