Summer Showers

Martin Johnson Heade

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Although Martin Johnson Heade’s depictions of marshy coastal wetlands offered little topographical drama, his small panoramic paintings of the salt-hay harvests from the 1860s to the 1880s adeptly captured fleeting effects of light and weather. Bluntly cropped at all four edges, these scenes lack a traditional dramatic focus, distinguishing them from the mainstream of landscape imagery at the time.
