Catalogue Description:
Sugar bowl (a) and cover (b); silver, cast and repoussé decoration; part of a six-piece tea and coffee service (75.164.1-.6). Circular stepped base, inset squat stem, circular body narrowing toward top, inset neck, broadening flange collar. Repoussé decoration consists of band of stylized acanthus around base of body, almond-shaped lozenge with stylized acanthus border enclosing dancing Cupid with tambourine, identical lozenge enclosing monogram: "MAC". Cast or raised border at base of neck and on flange collar. Handle on either side, high arched, terminating at top in double snake, sphinx head beneath snake with claw foot bottom terminal. Lid (b) is dome-shaped with broad brim. Stylized pineapple and vine repoussé decoration on dome. Finial is a feline figure seated on a circular disk supporting at front an oval shield. CONDITION: (a) Bowl: excellent, minor scratches; (b) Lid: excellent, minor scratches along brim, finial loose.
