Maria Theresia von Paradis
b. 1759, Vienna; d. 1824, Vienna

Blind from a very early age, Maria Theresia von Paradis played piano and worked as a composer in her hometown of Vienna, where Mozart wrote a piano concerto for her. For the stage, she composed Ariadne und Bacchus (1791); Der Schulkandidat (1792); the comedy-opera Rinaldo und Alcina (1797); as well as cantatas, songs, and works for piano. Von Paradis performed extensively in Vienna, toured in Paris and London, and founded a music institute in Vienna in 1808.
