Workshop: Make a Book with BlackMass
SOCIAL SCULPTURE, a highlight of Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech,” stems from the late artist and designer’s desire to create space for Black creatives and young people. The installation offers a platform for Black cultural dialogue through lectures, poetry, performances, and workshops. In this spirit, the Brooklyn Museum has organized a three-part series with the New York–based collective BlackMass Publishing. Through its work, BlackMass grapples with the idiosyncrasies that make up the collective improvisation of African diasporic culture, combining archival photographs and found print materials with poetry and jazz.
In the final program of the series, join Yusuf Hassan and Kwamé Sorrell of BlackMass within SOCIAL SCULPTURE for a collaborative bookmaking workshop focused on completing a xeroxed publication in a single afternoon. Images will be provided by BlackMass, and participants are encouraged to bring their own scannable images and ephemera to be included in the publication. Each guest can join the artists in contributing one or two pages to the collective book.
Visitors must purchase a ticket to Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” for January 12, 2023, in order to attend the workshop. Those with exhibition tickets for earlier in the day may leave the Museum and return for the workshop anytime between 1 and 5:30 pm. Member tickets are free. Not a Member? Join today!
