Brooklyn Society of Artists: Annual Exhibition [29th]

  • February 14, 1945 The 29th Annual Exhibition by the Brooklyn Society of Artists opened at the Brooklyn Museum on Tuesday, February 13, with a private view for Museum members, exhibition artists and their guests. The exhibition, which is installed in the Fifth Floor West Galleries, will be open to the public on Wednesday, February 14, and will remain current through Sunday, March 25.

    In keeping with established precedent, artists residing or teaching in Brooklyn were invited to submit works in oil, water color, black and white, and sculpture for selection by a jury. All members of the Brooklyn Society of Artists are entitled to the inclusion of one work in each of two media jury exempt. The exhibition this year contains 97 oil paintings, 67 water colors, 13 black and whites, and 10 pieces of sculpture.

    The Jury of Selection and Award for this exhibition was composed of Herbert B. Tschudy, Katherine A. Lovell, Doris Rosenthal, Herbert Ferber and Eleanor B. Swenson. All exhibitors were eligible for the prizes offered by the Brooklyn Society of Artists, and the prize winners are announced as follows:

    $100 War Bond for oil to William Thon for “Four Trees”

    $50 War Bond for water color to John Von Wicht for “Vision”

    $100 War Bond for sculpture to Francois H. Rubitschung for “Sustenance”

    $10 in War Stamps for black and white to Beulah Stevenson for "Wreck at Long Nook"

    Honorable mentions were awarded to Louis Schanker for his oil painting "Carnival" and to Abram Tromka for his water color “Gowanus Canal”.
