In the special exhibition gallery on the second floor of the Decorative Arts Department of the Brooklyn Museum is an exhibition of Tönder Lace lent by the Committee for the Danish National Exhibition. The lace will be on view from February 7th to the 28th.
Tönder lace is typically Danish and for two hundred years has stood in the minds of the Danish women for the best to be had. It has been worn by kings and royalty, the first king being Christian IV. Lately a royal princess had her trousseau trimmed with it.
One of the patterns in the present exhibition is known as the Christian IX, the monarch of one hundred years ago.
The exhibition is made up of pieces of lace by the yard, handkerchief frames and very complete tea and luncheon sets, to mention only a few. The luncheon sets are particularly interesting, as they include a cosy for the teapot, three sizes of doilies and a cloth.
