Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

This alluring and emblematic portrait features the so-called Gibson Girl type, created by the influential illustrator Charles Dana Gibson as an embodiment of idealized modern womanhood. Characterized by her youth, independence, confidence, and beauty, the Gibson Girl proliferated in the visual imagery of turn-of- the-century America. Minnie Clark, a famous artist’s model and the subject of J. Carroll Beckwith’s drawing (on display nearby), served as the inspiration for this type.
