BrooklyNites Jazz: Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Grammy Award–winning big band powerhouse the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra performs a fusion of Latin rhythms, clave, African-based percussion, modern jazz, and swing. Founded by pianist, composer, and educator Arturo O’Farrill, the ALJO performs compositions by the likes of Machito, Tito Puente, Chico O’Farrill, Astor Piazzola, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and Hermeto Pascoal, along with new commissions from Latin music’s most talented composers and arrangers. Doors are at 6 p.m., and the program opens with a performance by the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance’s youth orchestra, the Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats, at 6:30 p.m. Museum and WBGO members receive free admission; Museum Members please call the Membership Hotline at (718) 501-6326. The Brooklyn Museum remains open every Thursday until 10 p.m., allowing visitors to linger later in the galleries and enjoy exciting evening programs.
