Summer Teacher Institute: Connecting Visual and Language Arts
July 8, 2013
9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
This six-day course for K–8 instructors explores connections between visual and language arts. Offering a behind-the-scenes look at the Museum’s galleries, resources, and programs, it helps participants develop interdisciplinary lesson plans (for the museum or classroom environment) that reflect the diverse needs and learning styles of their students. Through modeling, guided practice, research, reflection, and application, participants will discover many ways in which object-based learning can be used to develop literacy skills, support the core curricula, and differentiate instruction for students with special needs, English-language learners, and gifted and talented students. Participants will also receive a wealth of teaching strategies and resources to help students meet New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts (Visual Arts) benchmarks and Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy.
