Mathilda, the daughter of a nobleman, married Henry I the Fowler, the first ruler of the Ottonian dynasty of Germany. She was the mother of Otto I, considered by some to be the first Holy Roman emperor. Charitable and deeply religious, Mathilda used her considerable wealth and property to found and endow a number of monasteries, located at Quedlinburg, Enger, and Nordhausen. She died at Quedlinburg, where her granddaughter Mathilda served as abbess, and was venerated as a saint shortly after her death.
