Fifty-Three Beads

Asian Art

The discovery in 1966 of ancient artifacts at the site of Ban Chiang in northern Thailand revealed that specialized technologies existed in Southeast Asia far earlier than previously thought. The Ban Chiang culture was making bronze as early as 3000 B.C.E. and glass around 1000 B.C.E. As with many cultures, the first Ban Chiang glass was blue, colored with copper, cobalt, or tin oxide.
